Downtown Portland Restaurant, Westcafe Tells the Tale of a Mr. Jack O’Lantern

In the nineteenth-century, the traditional celebrations revolving around October 31 were brought to the US by Irish immigrants. Jack O-lanterns became an integral part of Halloween festivities. It was traditional to put lanterns made from various vegetables in windows to welcome spirits of those passed on and wandering souls. But where did this tradition come from. Certainly there has to be a story associated with such a unique tradition. Well, like many traditions there are varying versions but there’s a general consensus, with each family or village filling in holes with their own details.

Jack was a penurious man hated by all. When encountered by the devil, he dodgingly convinced the devil to turn himself into a coin. Before the devil could change back he snapped the coin into his pocket and made the devil promise not to come back for him for an entire year.

One year later the devil returning and was wittily tricked into climbing an apple tree by Mr. Jack himself. While the devil was at the top of the tree Jack carved the sign of the cross into the tree’s trunk prohibiting the devil to come down from the tree. Jack forced the devil to not come down and take him for ten years.

Jack died before the ten years passed. He was turned away from heaven and so tried to enter hell where the devil would not permit it as he had promised Jack he would not take him until ten years. He was given a hot coal from hell which he carried around in a carved turnip as he wandered the earth. From this came Jack of the Lantern, or with the Irish twist, Jack O’Lantern.

Happy Halloween to everyone!

Be safe and have fun. We’ll be having happy hour prices all night long, and all weekend with Xavier Tabera tearing it up with his Cuban and Caribbean rhythms Saturday night, no admission charge!

Downtown Portland Restaurant Extends Oktoberfest with Long Happy Hours

If you’re unfamiliar with Oktoberfest but think you might like to celebrate it, being that it’s October, you still can. And you don’t even need to be German. It officially ended the first weekend in October, but here’s the thing; Oktoberfest is somewhat of a global party-for-the-sake-of-it party. How did this come to be?

On October 12, 1810 crown Prince Ludwig, who naturally became King Ludwig I, married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen inviting all Munich citizens to party on the lawn outside the city gates. Unquestionably, copious amount of locally brewed beer were consumed by the masses resulting in an unforgettable festival that would come to be an annual recurrence.

One year later Oktoberfest would add an agricultural show to the festival as well as maintain the horse races that the original party ended with. Eventually the festival was moved to the later part of September and prolonged until October 3rd due to a national holiday.

Now-a-days you can take whatever meaning you see fit for your own participation in Oktoberfest and celebrate for your own pleasures. Just because it’s finished for the year in Germany doesn’t mean the festivities and celebrations need to cease here.

Come into Westcafe, your local downtown Portland restaurant, to celebrate with happy hour all evening long. That means happy hour prices on all drinks (and we’ve got a lot, beer included) as well as delicious nibbles and appetizers for your delight. There’s a cozy seat waiting for you and your friends!

Downtown Portland Restaurant, Westcafe Spreads Green Love!

Did you know, the amount of straws we use in the US on average everyday would fill 127 school buses? We were shocked to see these numbers and are looking into joining fourth-grader Milo Cress in being straw-free. -BeStrawFree.org

We feel good when we know we are doing our part in reducing waste and pollution on our planet and we’d like to share our efforts with you.

For starters, we took part of the inside construction of our restaurant and used recycled products where possible. Paperstone, kirei board and marmoleum were used throughout the bar area, flooring and in the barista station. Kirei board is manufactured from unused sorghum stalks that are harvested for food in China. Sorghum factories are built in the agricultural areas to reduce shipping and energy which also brings a new revenue source to the regional farmers.

Our daily efforts to manintain a green business include using recycled materials, recycling and even composting. We know that compostable materials need to be composted in regular compost bins not in landfills where their compostability is frequently nullified. So we haul out our compotables. Some of our recycled materials include to-go containers, straws and bamboo skewers.

We used to give out bottled water to our customers but have since switched to filtered water from the tap. Our meat and poultry products are hormone free and when possible we select locally caught fish and produce. We want to serve our customers the best and also play a role in maintaining a healthy world.

We’ve continued our green efforts into our home by fully switching over to windpower.

Thanks so much to everyone else whose spreading their green love!
