Late Summer Season Foods According to Chinese Medicine

According to Chinese Medicine there are five seasons per year, unlike the Western view of four. Fall, winter, spring and summer are the same, with an additional late summer season. Each season is associated with one of the five major organs in the body. As we are in late summer now, the coordinating organ is the spleen which includes the stomach. For each of these different season/organ pair, there is also an associated flavor, i.e., pungent (acrid), sweet, sour, bitter and salty. Sweet is the coordinating flavor for late summer.

In Chinese medicine, it is beneficial at this time of year to eat foods that are sweet. This doesn’t exactly mean frosted cakes and pies, but instead fruits, beans and some other selections that wouldn’t obviously be perceived as sweet. Here are a few other: clam, crab, grapefruit, lettuce, persimmon, sugar cane, water chestnut, cucumber, barley, millet, tofu, chicken egg white, marjoram, oyster, peppermint, yogurt, cauliflower, corn, tomatoes, and several warming spices such as cinnamon, turmeric, dried ginger and orange peel.

Take a look at our menus. You’ll find we have many adequate late summer season foods for your delight and fancy. We have outdoor seating and welcome your little well behaved pooches to accompany you outside.

Labor Day Weekend Observance

Labor Day started in New York City in 1882 as part of the Central Labor Union. It is believed by some that Peter J. McGuire, labor activist, suggested the holiday in reverence to those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” More than 100 years later we are still celebrating the holiday by taking time off work and hopefully to reflect on all our accomplishments.

We will be closed Friday, September 2, 2011 and re-opening the doors for service on Monday September 5, 2011. We’d like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday weekend!

West Cafe in Downtown Portland: We’re Showing Our True Colors; Green!

With spring in the air and St. Patrick’s Day around the corner March makes out to be a very green month. In this spirit, West Café would like to point out what we are doing to keep our business green.

Here at West Café we make every effort to remain as environmentally friendly as possible. We started our green efforts during construction using recycled products such as paperstone, kirei board and marmoleum in the bar area, throughout the floors, for the wine rack and the in barista station.

We continue our efforts everyday by recycling, composting, and using recycled products including our to-go containers, straws and bamboo skewers. Our intention is to start using compostable to-go lids for hot and cold cups as well. Portland Roasters is working with us to make that happen. We are always looking for green and compostable alternatives as we are committed to reducing our landfill footprint.

At home we have completely switched to wind power. It’s such a great feeling that we are pushing our commercial building to do the same.

We’d like to thank all our fans and customers for their ‘green’ efforts. Green is the way to go!
